What is landscape design?

Landscape design is the analysis, planning and design of exterior spaces in an ecological context, with the goal of bringing harmony, beauty, and purpose to the land and enhancing the human experience and the ecological function to your home, business, and other spaces.

The Future of Landscape Design and the Changing Climate

APLD Oregon designers are currently discussing the changes in our climate and how it affects our design work.  We are committed as a group to create designs that can make a positive and informed impact environmentally. Together, we work towards finding aesthetically beautiful solutions that combine horticulture with ecology.

There are a host of elements we can use to enhance sustainability in our designs.  We work with our clients to create gardens that they can feel proud of.  Here are a few approaches:

  • Addressing stormwater runoff by incorporating rain gardens to help guide and percolate the water into the soil.

  • Laying natural mulches to retain moisture, prevent erosion and minimize weeds.

  • Including native plants that support pollinators and wildlife or even “ rewilding” your property.

  • Lighting in the landscape can add ambience and we choose fixtures to reduce energy use and lessen light pollution.

  • We seek to reuse materials already on site and find opportunities to use permeable hardscape materials where applicable.

  • Responsive water use starting with plant choice to low impact irrigation systems.

  • Eliminating invasive species also addresses some of our conservation goals.

APLD Oregon is continually sharing our own observations and we regularly attend events covering these topics and more. We are all in this together. We hope you will join us!
